Trauma-Informed Campus and Classroom Series
Discover how you can create resilient, inclusive environments that foster growth and belonging with our Trauma-Informed Campus and Classroom series. Developed by the Community Resilience Initiative (CRI), this two-part, immersive program empowers you with the knowledge and skills to make a profound impact in your classroom, office, department, or even your family. You’ll gain practical, evidence-based strategies to better understand trauma, respond effectively, and cultivate positive spaces where everyone feels safe, supported, and ready to thrive.
Course 1: Trauma-Informed Campus and Classroom Certification
Begin your journey with this six-hour foundational course, where you’ll learn how to recognize and respond to the effects of trauma with confidence and compassion. Designed for professionals across various fields, this training equips you to support resilience and promote equity—even when trauma histories are unknown. Through resilience-building practices, you’ll gain the skills needed to create inclusive spaces, and you’ll become an advocate for safety, belonging, and opportunity in every interaction.
Course 2: Trauma-Supportive Campus and Classroom – Creating Spaces of Belonging
Building on the trauma-informed foundations of Course 1, this interactive six-hour course offers hands-on strategies to turn any environment into a place of empowerment. From fostering a positive culture to compassionate discipline and effective conflict resolution, you’ll learn how to create nurturing settings that uplift and inspire. Key skills include:
- Using affirming communication to build resilience in others
- Teaching self-regulation techniques that support long-term well-being
- Delivering discipline that empowers rather than punishes
- Guiding others in understanding their own trauma and stress responses
- Applying trauma-informed approaches to conflict resolution

In this session, we’ll discuss:
- The Complex Causes of Poverty: From individual behaviors and community conditions to systemic factors, learn about the many factors that contribute to poverty.
- Understanding ALICE: Discover who ALICE is, the challenges this population faces, and why they’ve been a largely hidden demographic—until now.
- Basic Needs Insecurity: Explore the realities ALICE faces around housing, childcare, education, health care, and more, with powerful insights into how financial insecurity impacts daily life.
- Building Resilience: Learn about the strategies and strengths that can support ALICE individuals in overcoming obstacles, achieving educational goals, and pursuing a more stable future.

Virginia Career Coach Certification
The Virginia Career Coach Certification (VCCC) program provides coaches at Virginia’s community colleges with the frameworks and tools needed for effective career coaching based on the 12 competency areas outlined in the National Career Development Association (NCDA) Facilitating Career Development curriculum. The 40 training hours earned count toward the requirements of the Facilitating Career Development (FCD) course and the Certified Career Services Provider (CCSP) certification. Learning modules are provided which offer rich content and resources. Participants move through the modules at their own pace. There are 10 face-to-face hours offered through five 2-hour Zoom meetings.

Facilitating Career Development
The Facilitating Career Development (FCD) course provides coaches at Virginia’s Community Colleges with the framework and tools needed for effective career coaching. All coaches and staff who have completed the Virginia Career Coach Certification (VCCC) are eligible to enroll. The FCD course consists of 80 additional hours of training comprised of 14 hours of face-to-face instruction and discussion provided through interactive Zoom sessions, reading, assignments, research, and project-based learning.
FCD training is offered once in the fall and spring semesters. The Student Success Center will cover the cost of the FCD Student Manual and credential application ($275).

Coach, Advisor, and Navigator Support
The VCCS Student Success Center team offers monthly collaboration meetings with Coaches, Advisors, and Navigators for added support, sharing best practices, technical assistance needs, and timely professional development.
Faculty and Professional Advisor Support
The VCCS Student Success Center team now has a Coordinator of Access and Advising who will offer support with a specific focus on faculty advisors, professional advisors and G3 advisors. Stay tuned for upcoming programming, training, and networking opportunities to collaborate, strategize and develop advising initiatives that will improve student access, success and retention.

eLearning & Educational Technology Training
The mission of the eLearning and Educational Technology Committee (ELET) is to support teaching and learning in the VCCS by promoting instructional tools and design rooted in sound research and supported by best practices. ELET takes a needs-based approach to providing guidance to VCCS students, faculty, staff, and administration for technology selection, implementation, and training in the areas of teaching and learning with technology.

Mental Health First Aid for Adults teaches people how to recognize signs of mental health or substance use challenges in adults ages 18 and older, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person toward appropriate care if necessary. New Horizons – hosted by VCCS Student Success Center
The New Horizons Conference is the premier teaching and learning annual conference of the Virginia Community College System, attracting over 700 Virginia college faculty, staff, and administrative leaders. The conference serves the scholars, teachers, and practitioners of Virginia’s community colleges by supporting their professional development and interests in teaching, learning, and technology. The conference features 200 hours of programming, 40+ exhibitors, and honored award winners from across the state.
Hire Education – hosted by VCCS Workforce Programs
Virginia’s Community Colleges are foundational to the success of current and future workforce. The Hire Education conference pulls together the most innovative and creative minds in workforce and economic development, the business community, and state leaders to collaborate and share best strategies and new ways to better serve individuals and businesses in the commonwealth.
Student Leadership – hosted by VCCS Student Support Services
The Student Leadership Conference is an annual student event that is unique from other opportunities as it is the best way to connect directly with the heart of Virginia’s Community Colleges – its students. This conference is held over the weekend and attracts student leaders from all over the Commonwealth, with invitations being guided by student activities leaders at each college. This high-energy conference is packed with sessions geared specifically for students in addition to various social events to promote engagement and collaboration among peers.

Governance
Virginia’s Community Colleges hosts meetings of the Council of Deans and Directors (CODD), Workforce Development Advisory Council (WDAC), and Academic and Student Affairs Council (ASAC) at different times throughout the year.
Awards
Each year, outstanding faculty, staff and administrators are recognized for their contributions to Virginia’s Community Colleges. Award recipients are announced at the New Horizons Conference.
Chancellors’ Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE)
Purpose: The purpose of the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) is to recognize excellence in teaching in Virginia’s Community Colleges.
The Award: The Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence is awarded annually to one teaching faculty member in the VCCS who distinctly represents the teaching excellence found at VCCS college(s). The award provides the recipient with a VCCS stole and $5,000. One nomination per campus will be accepted.
Eligibility: Eligible applicants:
- Are full-time teaching faculty with unrestricted rank and salary proposals,
- Possess a minimum of five years of full-time VCCS service during which at least 75% of the workload was devoted to teaching, and
- Are recommended by the president of the employing institution
Criteria: The criteria on which the recipient is selected reflect the following:
- Instructional Effectiveness
- encourages active learning
- respects diverse talents and ways of knowing
- creates and offers many options for learning
- gives prompt feedback
- emphasizes time on task
- assesses student learning through documentation
- promotes a complete range of thinking skills
- integrates the acquisition of basic academic success skills and academic values into coursework
- integrates technology appropriately into teaching and learning
- understands current trends and issues related to pedagogy and the discipline
- Student Focus
- promotes positive student relationships
- encourages cooperation among students (through group work or projects, collaborative learning communities, or other mechanisms)

Note: All four criteria stated above will be given equal weight by the Selection Committee.
Application Process: Applicants for the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence must complete the Online Application form, which includes the following items:
- Letter of support from the college president
- Summary of Accomplishments (Four-page maximum): The major highlights of the nominee’s record of accomplishment must be identified and briefly described in a summary. This must directly address the criteria. The Summary may be prepared using bulleted sections; complete sentences are not required. A third-person perspective is suggested.
- Abbreviated Curriculum Vitae (Two-page maximum) An abbreviated vita outlining the nominee’s education, teaching experience, scholarly works and activities, public and academic service, awards, and other significant contributions must be included.
- Personal Statement (Two-page maximum): The nominee must prepare a personal statement addressing: their philosophy on teaching excellence and student success; and any other information deemed relevant by the nominee. Restating accomplishments discussed in the Summary section should be avoided as much as possible. It is suggested the personal statement be presented as a first-person narrative in complete sentences.
- Letters of Support – excerpted (Two-page maximum): Excerpts of support letters from supervisors (president, CAO, dean, dept. chair), colleagues (institutional and/or disciplinary), students (former and/or current), and community leaders or members must be included. (Two-page maximum; 250-word maximum for each excerpt)
- Completed Signature Sheet – This is a fillable PDF that can be completed using Adobe Acrobat.
Additional materials are not accepted. It is strongly recommended that all parts of the application reflect the four criteria listed above. Be sure to check with your college to make sure you are complying with any internal deadlines or processes.
Selection Committee: Selection of the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence recipient is made by a committee comprised of one college president, one academic vice president, two deans (one academic and one student services), three faculty members, one student, and the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success and Professional Development.

Chancellor’s Award for Student Services Excellence (CASSE)
Purpose: The Chancellor’s Award for Student Services Excellence recognizes an exceptional member of a college’s Student Services department who has consistently gone above and beyond their regular duties to provide outstanding support and assistance to students. This prestigious award aims to honor individuals who have demonstrated a strong commitment to enhancing the overall student experience and have significantly impacted the lives of students through their dedication, professionalism, and exceptional service.
The Award: The Chancellor’s Award for Student Services Excellence is awarded annually to one student services professional in the VCCS who distinctly represents the excellence in serving students found at VCCS college(s). The award provides the recipient with a plaque and $5,000. One nomination per campus will be accepted.
Eligibility: Eligible applicants:
- Are full-time student services professionals who do not hold the position of dean or higher,
- Possess a minimum of five years of full-time VCCS service during which at least 75% of the workload was devoted to providing services directly to students, and
- Are recommended by the president of the employing institution
Criteria and Application Process: Applicants for the Chancellor’s Award for Student Service Excellence must complete the Online Application form, which includes the following items:
- College President’s Letter of Nomination: A letter of support from the college president that demonstrates the nominee’s history of outstanding leadership and service.
- Excellence in Student Support: Describe how the staff member consistently demonstrates a high level of commitment to student success by providing exceptional service and support. They have a strong understanding of student needs, actively listen to student concerns, and provide genuine empathy while striving to find effective solutions. (maximum 300 words/2,000 characters with spaces)
- Innovation and Creativity: Describe how the staff member displays a proactive and innovative approach to addressing challenges and improving the student experience. They contribute fresh ideas, embrace new technologies and methods, and develop innovative programs or initiatives that enhance the overall support and services provided to students. (maximum 300 words/2,000 characters with spaces)
- Collaboration and Teamwork: Describe how the staff member actively collaborates with colleagues, demonstrating a strong commitment to working effectively as part of a team. They foster positive and constructive relationships, share knowledge and resources, and contribute to a cooperative and supportive work environment. (maximum 300 words/2,000 characters with spaces)
- Leadership and Professionalism: Describe how the staff member exhibits exceptional leadership skills, inspiring and motivating others to achieve excellence. They lead by example, display professionalism and integrity in their work, and serve as a role model for their peers and students alike. (maximum 300 words/2,000 characters with spaces)

Susan S. Wood Professorship for Teaching Excellence
This award is funded through the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education
Purpose: A fund supporting the Susan S. Wood Professorship for Teaching Excellence was created by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education in November 2013 to honor Dr. Susan S. Wood’s 40 years of service to Virginia’s Community Colleges. The Susan S. Wood Professorship for Teaching Excellence recognizes a VCCS faculty member who demonstrates faculty excellence, dedication to students, and academic leadership.
The Award: The Susan S. Wood Professor will receive an honorarium paid at the end of the spring semester. The honorarium shall not become a part of the individual’s base salary. Designation as Susan S. Wood Professor shall not affect the faculty rank of the individual.
Eligibility: Individuals applying for this honor should be full-time faculty members in the VCCS whose careers reflect a history of striving for excellence, commitment and dedication to students, creative and innovative approaches to teaching, active involvement in one’s discipline, demonstrating leadership and collegiality among peers (at the college, state, and/or national levels), and reflecting continuous professional growth and development during his/her continuum of being a faculty member. The individual should be a seasoned professional who is giving back to the profession in some meaningful and demonstrable way, for example mentoring junior or adjunct faculty, engaging in research, and involving students in their work. A minimum of five years’ service to the VCCS is preferred.
Selection: Through a competitive selection process, a VCCS faculty member will be designated as the Susan S. Wood Professor. Faculty excellence, dedication to students, and academic leadership will be evident in the faculty member selected to receive this honor. The application & selection process is coordinated by the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success and Professional Development with oversight by the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic and Workforce Programs.
Application Process: Applicants for the Susan S. Wood Professorship for Teaching Excellence must submit an online application form, which includes the following items:
- A letter of nomination from their college president: Demonstrates the nominee’s teaching excellence

George B. Vaughan Leadership Award for Outstanding Adjunct Faculty
This award is made possible in part by support from the George B. Vaughan Leadership Endowment Fund through the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education.
Purpose: Friends and family of Dr. George B. Vaughan established an endowment fund in 2014 to honor Dr. Vaughan’s distinguished service of over 40 years as a national leader in community college education. The George B. Vaughan Leadership Award for Outstanding Adjunct Faculty serves as a legacy of Dr. Vaughan’s achievements and as an inspiration for VCCS faculty. The award recognizes one outstanding VCCS adjunct faculty member per region for a total of up to five awards to be bestowed per year. The George B. Vaughan Leadership Award for Outstanding Adjunct Faculty is the first VCCS award to recognize the approximately 4,600 adjunct faculty members who are making an impact with countless students across Virginia.The Award: Each Vaughan Award recipient receives an honorarium paid before the end of the spring semester.
Eligibility: Individuals applying for this honor must be current VCCS employees, serving as adjunct faculty members at the time of nomination, with a minimum of two years of service to their current, nominating college. Service does not have to be continuous but should be at a single VCCS college. Applicants’ adjunct teaching careers should reflect the excellence in leadership, teaching effectiveness, and student service exemplified by Dr. Vaughan. Adjunct faculty are nominated by their college president via a letter of recommendation. Presidents may nominate no more than one adjunct faculty member per campus.
Application Process: Applicants for the George B. Vaughan Leadership Award for Outstanding Adjunct Faculty must submit an online application form, which includes the following items:
- Letter of recommendation from their college president: A supporting letter should demonstrate the nominee’s history of outstanding leadership, teaching, and service.
- Current Resume or Curriculum Vitae (Two-page maximum)
- Demonstration of Leadership Excellence (300 words/2,000 characters with spaces): Describe how your career in the VCCS has demonstrated excellence in leadership, in the classroom and beyond.
- Evidence of Teaching Effectiveness including additional supporting materials (300 words/2,000 characters with spaces along with up to five supporting file uploads): Describe how effective teaching is evident in your VCCS adjunct faculty career. Applicants should demonstrate superior innovative teaching techniques and practices with a commitment to providing students with instruction of the highest quality; adapt readily to student needs, interests, and problems; provide outstanding support for the growth and development of individual students; and demonstrate use of relevant, contemporary information from their discipline in their teaching. Supporting materials may include class syllabus, student evaluations, professional presentations, and professional publications. (maximum of 5 files uploaded)

Selection: Vaughan Award recipients are chosen through a competitive selection process overseen by a panel of outstanding educators assembled from across the VCCS by the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Student Success and Professional Development. The panel will select adjunct faculty members who they determine best embody the excellence in leadership, teaching, and dedication to student success Dr. Vaughan inspires. Candidates should demonstrate consistently superior teaching and a commitment to providing students with instruction of the highest quality; adapt readily to student needs, interests, and problems; provide outstanding support for the growth and development of individual students; and demonstrate use of relevant, contemporary information from their discipline in their teaching.

Excellence in Education Awards (EIE)
Purpose: The Excellence in Education (EIE) Awards acknowledge exceptional college work in support of the VCCS mission. The Excellence in Education awards program provides an annual opportunity to showcase, celebrate, and share ideas and innovations across the VCCS that contribute to improving student outcomes and reaching our strategic goals.
The Award: The Excellence in Education Awards is a celebration, acknowledgement and affirmation of the tremendous work that so many are doing to serve our students and communities. The 2025 New Horizon Excellence in Education award categories will be announced when applications open.
The winner project/program in each category will be awarded a certificate and $500.
Please note: All cash prize award funds will be transmitted from the System Office to the business office of the winner’s college for disbursement; funds will not be made payable directly to awardees by the VCCS System Office.
Eligibility: Any VCCS employee may be nominated for an award.
Nomination Process: Any VCCS employee may be nominated. Nominations for the Excellence in Education Awards must be submitted using the online application form, which includes the following items:

Inquiry, the Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges, offers faculty and staff an outlet to publish professionally, to share research and ideas, and to engage in broader conversations about issues and concerns that impact higher education and community colleges.
Do you have pedagogical strategies to share? Are you developing a redesign or community project at your institution? Have you recently completed graduate work? Inquiry is interested in publishing your work in our peer-reviewed journal. Submissions are reviewed by editors on a continuous basis as we have a rolling deadline, so we encourage you to submit any time. Inquiry is published at least once per year.
